Finding Ways to Be Social in Virtual Schools

Many cyber schools regularly use social-networking tools in their online classes and are also moving to incorporate some face-to-face interaction into their classes. Those interactions often have an educational bent, such as field trips, but some are purely social—like proms and back-to-school picnics.

“Students realize they’re not isolated at their house,” said Shelley C. Dickey, a family-support coordinator for Agora Cyber Charter School, a 6,000-student K-12 school based in Wayne, Pa. “There’s a huge community out there.”

THE NEW SCHOOLS: Charter, cyber-charter schools provide options

Charter schools are created and controlled by parents, teachers, community leaders, and colleges or universities. Charter schools operate free from many educational mandates, except for those concerning nondiscrimination, health and safety and accountability.

A cyber-charter school is an educational institution which is both a charter school and a virtual school or cyberschool. Cyber-charter schools are approved by the state Department of Education and educate students via the internet wherever the students are, rather than in a school building.

Alle-Kiski Valley Districts take issue with costs of cyber schools

The review found that the reserve fund balance percentages for some of those schools ranged from 13 percent to 95 percent of their annual expenditures.

Wagner’s report further found public school districts paid different tuition rates for students attending the same charter/cyber-charter school, resulting in some school districts subsidizing others.

School district officials claim they are losing revenue, but at the same time, their costs don’t decrease.

By law, school districts must show a reason for reducing their teaching staff, whose salaries and benefits account for much of their budgets. They can’t cut staff arbitrarily.
